(Johor Bahru, July 11) Barisan Nasional has romped to a comprehensive victory in the Johor state election 2026, winning 48 seats to extend its dominance over Malaysia’s southernmost state and leave the opposition scrambling to reassess its position ahead of the next general election.
The most dramatic individual result of the night came in the Simpang Jeram constituency, where Pakatan Harapan’s Amanah candidate Nazri clung on to win by the narrowest of margins — just 170 votes — in a four-cornered contest involving UMNO, PAS and a fourth candidate. The result was one of the last to be confirmed and kept supporters in both camps on edge for much of the evening.
At the other end of the scale, UMNO’s candidate in Iskandar Puteri romped home with a majority of more than 21,000 votes, while the caretaker Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz retained his Machap seat with a comfortable majority of over 15,000 votes, cementing his position as the frontrunner to continue leading the Johor state government.
The Johor state election result 2026 was also notable for the complete shutout of Perikatan Nasional, which failed to win any of the 33 seats it contested. PN had held three seats going into the election — Bukit Kepong, Jelebu and Maharani — but all three were recaptured by BN, leaving the coalition without any representation in the Johor state assembly for the first time since its formation.
Voter turnout of 67.44 percent was the highest recorded in a Johor state election in recent years, suggesting that both the BN machinery and the opposition’s campaign efforts succeeded in driving voters to the polls, even if the ultimate beneficiary of that higher turnout was overwhelmingly BN.
